Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Counters President Trump's Threat to Relocate FIFA World Cup Games from City
Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, indicated that the municipality was ready for a dispute with President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup tournament games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Boston.
Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to answer criticism from the White House, which had described her as "radical left." Trump had threatened that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "improve its situation."
A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no one, even the president, can undo it.
She continued, "We live in a time where for attention, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and comply or be obedient to a divisive plan."
She also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." She finished by stressing her commitment for the Boston, saying, "Fully committed for Boston."
Trump's Comments and FIFA's Involvement
Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the White House and given World Cup and Club World Cup awards to the president as presents.
On Tuesday, President Trump was asked about unrest in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police vehicle being set on fire. He responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the head of the organization, who's great."
Trump added, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Past Threats and Upcoming Tournament Details
Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with Infantino about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is planned to be held from June 11 to 19 July in the coming year.
