British authorities has included 11 new nations to its public alert roster about the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.

The updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only last month, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to multiple serious events such as the tragic death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical typically utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not meant for human consumption.

While it is generated during the creation of spirits, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.

Authorities' Guidance for Travellers

Government representative the minister emphasized that all travellers should recognize the signs of methanol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks overseas, stick to reputable establishments and avoid local brews or free shots," the minister said.

"In case something seems unusual, like a headache that's far more intense than typical or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."
