Federal Government Prepared to Dispatch Scores Government Officers to San Francisco
The federal government seemed ready on Wednesday to deploy numerous of law enforcement personnel to the Bay Area region for a significant border security initiative, sparking condemnation from local politicians.
Details of the Operation
Specifics of the mission were still emerging, but it will reportedly include more than 100 government officers, as reported. The personnel are scheduled to begin occupying the military installation in across the bay, opposite San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether military personnel would participate.
Government Backlash
The deployment follows an extended period of warnings by the president to target the progressive municipality. The state's leader Gavin Newsom criticized the move, labeling it “taken directly from the dictator’s handbook”.
“He sends out covered agents, he sends out Border Patrol, he dispatches federal agents, he generates worry and terror in the population so that he can take credit for solving that by sending in the national guard,” he declared. “This is no different than the arsonist fighting the blaze.”
City Readiness
San Francisco is the latest large urban area focused on by Donald Trump’s campaign of large-scale detentions. The deployment is anticipated to provoke a confrontation between the White House and city officials who have pledged to prevent paramilitary operations in the city.
San Franciscans have been readying for weeks for Trump to make good on frequent statements to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s city leader stated again that the city was ready.
“Over recent weeks, we have been preparing for the chance of some kind of government operation in our city,” stated the official, noting that he had taken further executive actions on Wednesday to “bolster the city’s protection of our immigrant communities, and make certain our offices are coordinated ahead of any government operation.”
Legal Framework
In spite of court battles to missions in a multiple urban areas, including Chicago, Oregon and Southern California, Trump has asserted “absolute authority” to send the military forces in cities, pointing to the presidential authority which permits presidents certain rights to deploy troops on US soil.
Community Preparation
The governor, who previously served as San Francisco’s chief executive – had vowed to take action “right away” to a mission in the city. “The concept that the federal government can deploy troops into our cities with no valid reason based on facts, no monitoring, no answerability, no consideration of regional control – it’s a direct assault on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.
Community groups, including advocacy organizations established during the initial federal leadership, have organized to rapidly assemble a mass rally in the city, as well as peaceful assemblies at community centers.
Neighborhood Consequences
In San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, a mostly Latin American community, local representative told reporters last week she and her residents had been anticipating this moment. “The time that people stop going to work, when anyone Black or brown can’t freely walk outside without the fear of Trump’s federal agents targeting based on race and arresting them, the point when families keep children home, grow too frightened to go to the supermarket or physician,” she said. “What we have been preparing for in the Mission is essentially a closure the extent of which we have not experienced since Covid.”
National Guard Condition
About several hundred out of four thousand regional national guard troops stay under federal control under an directive from Trump. Roughly two hundred of them had been dispatched to the Pacific Northwest, where they were staying in standby during a court case over their assignment.
This period, Newsom said he had requested the California national guard troops under his control to manage distribution centers throughout the government shutdown.
