Rare Red Lightning Photographed in the Heavens
A team of photographers operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of red lightning, one of the most elusive light phenomena in the world, during which luminous crimson flashes appear in the heavens.
A Remarkable Night of Discovery
The imaging specialists initially planned to capture the galactic core over the distinctive clay formations in the southern region of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the unusual spectacle.
Assuming they would be lucky to get good weather that night, but their night became “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer remarked.
Upon examining his photographs for a stellar landscape and found he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the individual noted. “It was unbelievable – it resulted in excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the darkness.”
Understanding Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are atmospheric energy releases in the higher atmospheric layers, generated by electrical storms. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the earth, red sprites propel upward towards the upper atmosphere, producing shapes that resemble pillars, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The earliest recorded picture of a red sprite was captured – by chance – in the late eighties, by a team at the a academic organization.
Fleeting and Dreamlike Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but one photographer had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing straight toward one when it occurred – pure chance observing the appropriate section of the sky and I observed a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.
Witnessing the events was a dream for the artist, an honored dark sky artist. “It appears as if you’re seeing something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to see.”
Advanced and Artistic Mastery
Capturing a red sprite needs a expertise in specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of scientific principles and artistic vision, the individual said. “This is a highly complex form of imaging that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
Another photographer said it was one of the “most incredible evenings” of his life. “I was able to observe the galactic band shining above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of illumination danced above a electrical event at a great distance,” he described.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no additional photographs depicting red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in one frame.
“It was one of those moments when you understand you are seeing something you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
