Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore presents an inspired performance playing Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into starring in an aerobics show on TV. Forced aside due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying procedure known as this experimental method. This creates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more parasitic dynamic among both women. This Friday, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque thriller includes Keira Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take some time off from reporting on global conflict to board a luxury cruise with a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her husband, as well as other affluent individuals. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Streaming currently, on Netflix
Presence
Soderbergh tests his directorial skills through this clever ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the camera – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The teen shows signs of sensing the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that remains concise, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Cage fully commits to his cult stardom in this meta comedy caper. He plays a self-obsessed film star called Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to spy on the potential kingpin, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective even without a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has left the children on edge. When Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. But the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals begin profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, bad makeup and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain achieves to present the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel
The Spy Mystery
This period's another release by the same director delivers a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks sported by the actor's UK spy. He is tasked to discover a double agent within their ranks from five suspects – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
