Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Police say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.

Officers then discovered many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state initial examinations show the liquid was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.

A senior official said the vandalism made him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
